Your Seasonal Growing Guide: Gardening Throughout the Seasons
Growing your own fruits and vegetables is great for both the environment and your wallet! However, if you’re just getting started, there’s a lot you’ll need to learn.
Here, you’ll discover everything you need to know to get started and which fruits and vegetables are the easiest to grow.
Know your seasonal produce
In order to grow your own seasonal produce, it helps to know which produce thrives in which seasons.
The National Trust has actually put together an excellent seasonal produce guide you can follow. A quick look at that will show you January is prime Leek season, while Rhubarb flourishes in April. If you’re hoping to grow strawberries, they’ll be in season in July. Check out the guide for more details on how to grow these seasonal fruits and veg and be sure to do as much research as possible before you begin.
Make sure you’ve got the right equipment
Of course, you can’t grow your own fruit and vegetables without the right equipment. At the very least, you’re going to need something to grow them in.
While it’s possible to grow some fruits and vegetables in a pot, ideally, you’ll want something that’s going to protect the produce all year round. A polytunnel is a fantastic investment. It helps to provide a prime growing environment, while also protecting the plants and trees against pesky critters. You can pick up high-quality polytunnels from companies such as Premier Polytunnels.
Prepare to use them
It’s all well and good growing your own fruit and vegetables, but have you figured out how you’re going to use them?
Having a set list of recipes ready to try out will help you make full use of your deliciously fresh produce. For example, if you’re growing rhubarb ready for April, you can create delicious rhubarb crumbles. Or, why not try a more unique recipe such as rhubarb and gingernut cheesecake, or even rhubarb gin?
There’s so many ways to cook with your fresh produce so it’s a great time to experiment and eat a much more varied diet.
Overall, growing your own fruit and vegetables can be a challenge. However, providing you do plenty of research, there’s no reason you can’t successfully start your own little vegetable garden. Growing your own fruits and vegetables delivers so many awesome benefits so why not start now?
